Warning signs of “Knee Osteoarthritis”

The knee osteoarthritis is the number one orthopedic symptom of Thai people. It often occurs at the age of 55 and above. However, with the lifestyle of people nowadays, “knee osteoarthritis” continues to occur prematurely. The knees are organs that are mostly used in all body movements, whether walking, running, jumping, getting up, or sitting. Also, the knees need to support our weight as well. The more the knees need to support our weight or force, the more they will deteriorate.
Whenever these symptoms occur, the culprit could be “knee osteoarthritis”
Knee pain is the most common symptom. The pain will become more severe when using the knees and become less painful after taking a rest. For example: Walking, going up or down the stairs, or sitting on the knees. The symptom will get better after you stop using the joint. Other symptoms can occur, for example:
• Tight or stiff thighs with swollen knees
• Feel stiffness in the joint while moving and feel pain sometimes
• Unstable movement, like the knees are loose
• Noise from inside the joint that is not a crackling sound while moving (if hearing the noise while moving, it might mean that the muscles around the knees are loose, not tight)
• Unable to completely bend the knees or stretch the joint
• Deformed knees or the knees are bent outward

When the osteoarthritis becomes severe, it will become more painful. The pain often comes at night. In some cases, a bone growth may occur on the side of the joint. If left for a long time and the osteoarthritis becomes more severe, you will find that you will not be able to stretch or bend the knees completely. Atrophy will occur to the thigh muscles. The knees will be crooked. You will face difficulty and pain in your daily life while walking or moving.

What behaviors can accelerate knee osteoarthritis?
Repeated behaviors can hurt the knees, like sitting cross-legged, sitting with folded knees to the side, squatting, crawling, kneeling, or being in a serious accident. Moreover, being overweight is another factor that adds more force on the knees from body movement in everyday life, whether from standing, walking, or sitting, which is evident from the doctor’s suggestion for patients with knee osteoarthritis to keep their weight within normal criteria.
Do you know that jumping is one of the behaviors that hurts the knees?
In fact, the knees can withstand up to 7 times the compressive force. Though jumping exerts 3-5 times the compressive force, if done repeatedly, the bone that acts as the support will deteriorate faster.

What are the treatment methods? Can it be fixed completely?
Currently, there is no treatment method that can completely reverse knee osteoarthritis. However, treatment can control the symptoms and relive the pain, allowing the knees to be used in a condition as close to normal as possible. The treatment methods will vary according to each patient, depending on various factors, such as age, severity of the disease, expected use, and readiness of the treatment provider. There are 2 main treatment methods, which are:
• Non-surgery treatment method, which can begin by adjusting daily use of the knees. For example: Avoid standing or walking for a long time; avoid sitting with bent knee, such as kneeling, sitting with knees on the side, squatting, or sitting cross-legged; and losing weight, including doing physical therapy and taking medication or synovial fluid injection, which is an alternative that helps to reduce the pain and provide better joint movement.
• Surgery treatment method which is used when there is indication that the patient cannot receive treatment by other methods or other treatment methods are ineffective and the patient still has severe pain on the knees and is unable to perform basic daily activities. Therefore, “total knee replacement” is a treatment method that removes the deteriorated articular surface and replaces it with artificial articular surface. Physical therapy after the surgery will help the patient to perform their normal daily activities.
